Card lifecycle and management
Card status
Understanding the lifecycle and status of a card is key to managing its usage and security. Mynt’s platform supports various card statuses, each serving specific purposes:
- OK: Card is fully operational and can be used for transactions.
- Blocked/Frozen: Temporarily disables the card. Partners can choose to use one or both statuses (e.g., admin-blocked or user-frozen). When a card is blocked, associated tokens (Apple Pay/Google Pay) are automatically suspended.
- PRE_ORDER: Card is ordered but will only be issued once KYC (Know Your Customer) is completed. This status allows for early card requests without activation.
- Terminated: Permanently deactivates the card, often due to a user or partner request. This status also deactivates any linked tokens.
Real-time card issuance and management
One of the key advantages of Mynt’s card product is its real-time functionality, which enables businesses to create and activate cards instantly. This flexibility means that cards can be issued as soon as they are needed, whether for new employees, temporary contractors, or unexpected expenses. Virtual cards can be generated and activated immediately.
Active status for physical cards
For physical cards, Mynt tracks the status of each physical instance (plastic) of the card. Each plastic is managed as a unique sequence, allowing Mynt to control which card instances are active:
- Active: The card can be used for transactions.
- Not Active: Cards can also be issued in a locked state, requiring the cardholder to activate the card through the partner’s mobile app before it can be used. This option is configurable during partner onboarding and provides an additional layer of security.
PIN management
The PIN system is designed for secure cardholder authentication during transactions:
- PIN Validation: Mynt supports both online and offline PIN validation:
- Offline: Validates directly through the card’s chip before initiating a transaction.
- Online: PIN is encrypted and validated through Mynt’s system during transaction authorization.
- PIN Reset:
- Offline PIN Counter: Information about the counter is only stored on the card’s chip. If the offline PIN counter is locked due to too many incorrect attempts, the cardholder must perform a transaction where PIN validation is done online by entering the correct PIN. Based on experience, ATMs always perform online PIN validation, so using the card at an ATM (e.g., withdrawal or balance check) will reset the offline PIN try counter.
- Online PIN Counter: If the online PIN counter has been exceeded and locked, the partner can reset it by using Mynt’s API. Before allowing the reset, partners must perform Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) on the user.
Reissue
Typically for worn or damaged cards. The PAN and expiration date remain(unless there is less than 2 months left of expiration), ensuring continuity for any recurring payments. This can be initiated via a 2nd-line ticket to Mynt support.
