Card renewal process

Card renewal is an automated process managed by Mynt to prevent disruption in card usage. It ensures that cardholders receive a new, active card before their current one expires, without the need for manual intervention.
The renewal process is triggered 45 days prior to the card’s expiration date, and is only applied to cards with the status ‘Card OK’.
Example:
If a card is set to expire on June 30, 2025, the renewal process will be automatically triggered on May 16, 2025.
Key behaviors during card renewal
Updated card details
When a renewal card is ordered, the following information is updated automatically:
- Expiration date
- CVV2/CVC2 security code
These new details are issued as part of the renewal, ensuring the cardholder has uninterrupted access to valid credentials. The updated card details will be available digitally and are reflected in both the Mynt interface and digital wallet integrations, where applicable.
PIN code remains the same
The cardholder’s current PIN will be retained. This avoids unnecessary friction and helps maintain a seamless user experience.
Transition from old to new physical card
The existing physical card will remain fully functional until the new card is used for the first time with chip and PIN.
- Once the new card is inserted into a terminal and activated with the correct PIN, the old card is automatically deactivated.
- This approach ensures a secure and smooth transition, minimizing risk of service interruption or confusion for the cardholder.
Partner responsibilities
While Mynt automates the renewal process, partners play a critical role in ensuring its success, especially in customer communication and data accuracy.
Maintain accurate delivery addresses
Partners must ensure that cardholder address information is correct and up to date in Mynt’s system at least 45 days before the expiration date.
Important: Cards will be delivered to the address listed in Mynt’s records at the time of renewal. Incorrect addresses may result in failed deliveries or customer dissatisfaction.
Native Partners: partner-managed communication
For partners who manage customer-facing platforms or apps, it is essential to proactively inform cardholders of upcoming renewals.

Recommended communication timeline:
- 90 days before expiration:
Initial reminder to verify the cardholder’s delivery address. - 60 days before expiration:
Follow-up reminder and address confirmation. - Within 45-day renewal window:
Notification to set expectations on when and how the new card will arrive, and what actions (e.g., chip + PIN activation) will be required. A reminder that some online subscriptions or services may need to be updated with the new card details (e.g., card number, expiration date, CVV), as these will change with the renewal.
Light Partners: Mynt-managed communication
For light partners, Mynt handles all customer communication directly through mobile notifications and email. Customers will see address change options 90 days before card renewal in both web and mobile applications.
Physical Cards - Renewal Timeline:
- 90 days before expiration: First reminder sent via mobile app and email (for active physical cards only)
- 65 days before expiration: Second reminder sent if address not confirmed by user (for active physical cards only)
- 45 days before expiration: New card automatically shipped
Custom carrier design
Mynt supports custom carrier designs (that differ from first card order) for physical card delivery to enable partners to customize the communication to cardholders during the renewal process.

Technical implementation
Webhook notification
Partners receive a CARD_EXPIRES webhook event 90 calendar days before the cardExpiresAt date.
Important: The cardDeliveryAddress in this webhook represents the current address on file that will be used for card delivery if no changes are made before the renewal process begins (45 days before expiration).
Address updates
Use the PATCH /cards/{id} endpoint to update delivery addresses for physical cards.
